Custodians keep your will authentic

You can sign and store your will entirely online — as long as it’s managed by an approved Qualified Custodian.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Qualified Custodian?

A Qualified Custodian, or "QC," is a legally recognized fiduciary role, which allows certain individuals and firms to securely store last wills and testaments electronically on behalf of others.

What happens if an electronic will is not maintained by a Qualified Custodian?

If an electronic will is not maintained by a Qualified Custodian, it will be treated as a lost or destroyed will.
Can I withdraw my e-will from VanDemir?

VanDemir is flexible. There are no pesky contracts and no commitments. You can easily withdraw your e-will at anytime. As such, there are no fees to withdraw your e-will from VanDemir.

However, if you choose not to transfer your e-will to another qualified custodian, it might lose its legal status as an e-will, meaning you should execute a new paper version of your will immediately.

Can't I just scan my “original” will?

A printed copy of your scanned will is not legally equivalent to your signed original.

For a court to accept a digital copy of your last will and testament, it must meet the elements of an e-will, including that it was held by a qualified custodian on your behalf.

What if I need to update my e-will?

Updating your e-will is as simple as electronically notarizing your updated e-will with a VanDemir Qualified Custodian.

If you have room in your account, then you may add a Codicil (will amendment), to your existing Qualified Custodian Account for no additional fee.

How much does it cost to deposit an additional e-will?

If you deposit a new e-will later, you’ll only need to cover the cost of electronically notarizing your new e-will.

Can I transfer my e-will to VanDemir?

Yes. You can transfer your will from QC-to-QC (Qualified Custodian), where the current custodian directly transfers the will to the new qualified custodian.

We'll give you a credit to your VanDemir account, up to $125, when you provide us with a receipt of any fees your current Qualified Custodian charged for the transfer.

Can I store my other estate planning documents?

Yes. VanDemir offers a document add-on for other estate planning documents, which is free for the first year, and $2 per month after that–paid yearly. This plan is designed to hold up to five additional estate planning documents.

If you need to store more documents beyond the listed limits, simply submit a request through the VanDemir “Contact Us” page. Our team will review it and work with you to create a plan that fits your requirements.
